Immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie's success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: "water".

If you have signed up to participate in another Storybook Theatre class during the fall 2017 semester, you are still welcome to audition for this production. It is unlikely that those cast in lead roles in this production will also be able to participate in a fall show. The audition form will contain more information about this and will allow you to mark your preference should you have to choose between one production or the other. Please note that I do suggest signing up for a fall 2017 class if you wish to ensure participation in a play during the upcoming semester. The Miracle Worker has a limited number of parts and not everyone who auditions will be cast. Regular classes will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, as always, and class lists may be adjusted after this production has been fully cast. If you have more questions, feel free to contact me. To sign up for a Storybook Theatre fall class, register here.

Please realize that this production has a large time commitment. It will require extensive character work and dedication on the part of every individual who is cast in the show.

Characters Available:
We will be looking for actors to fill the following roles. Note - the character ages are what we will be portraying. The show will be a youth production with actors ages 10-18.

Annie Sullivan - early 20's.  Annie is Helen’s teacher. She is strong and outspoken, driven by the challenges of her own life. She wants the best possible life for Helen, even if that means she goes against the wishes of Helen's parents. She will be involved in intense physical scenes. Must develop a strong connection with Helen Keller. Irish accent is a plus.

Helen Keller - young child (appears 7-10). She is trapped in a world all her own, as she is deaf/blind/mute. Blind and deaf since she was a baby, she has no knowledge of how to communicate with those around her. She will be involved in intense physical scenes. Must develop a strong connection with Annie Sullivan.

Captain Arthur Keller - 40s-50s. Helen's father. He struggles to understand his daughter and the world in which she is trapped, but he is loving all the same. He is a Captain, and his personality is stern and rigorous at times as a result.

Kate Keller - 30s-40s. Helen’s mother. She is fiercely devoted to her family, but hates that she cannot help her daughter. She continually gives Helen her way and gives in to tantrums in an effort to placate the misfortune of Helen's circumstances. She connects with Annie Sullivan in a way that Captain Keller cannot.

James Keller- late teens-early 20s. James is the Captain's son, and Helen's half-brother. He would prefer to see Helen go to an asylum rather than have to watch her be cared for in his home.

Aunt Ev - 30s-50s. Helen's aunt. She has an opinion about everything and helps connect the Keller family with the Perkins School for the Blind (where they discover Annie).

Anagnos - 40s-50s. Annie's counselor at the Perkins Institute for the Blind. He wants Annie to be successful and is kind.

Viney - 30s-50s . The household servant. She cares for those in her charge with kindness.

Percy - age 8-12. Household staff, playmate to Helen.

Martha - age 8-12. Household staff, playmate to Helen.

Blind Girls - age 8-14. Friends of Annie at the Perkins Institute for the Blind.
