Summer 2010 Registration Information (8-12)

Dear American Girls & Families,

The spring semester is nearing its end – it has been fun, that’s for sure! I originally did not plan to offer a summer class this year, but I’ve had so many inquiries in the past few weeks, I decided to give it a whirl. Please check for a separate email with info about a new Craft Club opportunity as well!

For any newcomers who may be reading this, here’s a little background info about AGDT. This summer will be the 15th semester of AGDT classes - to date, 93 girls have been involved in 41 different productions! AGDT is aimed at girls ages 8-12 (if your daughter’s 8th birthday falls during the current class, then she can participate). The class time is spent rehearsing a play which will be performed at the end of the eight-week class for family and friends to see.

Thanks to all who attended our recent Teen production of Lost and Foundling. My community theatre schedule will not allow me to have a Teen class this semester, but I have a lot of exciting things planned for the future! If your daughter is 13 or older (age 12 is okay if she has been in one of my past classes) and you are not already on my teen mailing list, please let me know if you would like to be added!

For the girls ages 8-12, I am happy to offer 2 Monday classes this semester:

Monday A (1:00-2:30pm) – Julie for President! – Based on Changes for Julie by Megan McDonald. Julie decides to run for student body president at her elementary school and faces opposition from Mark – the most popular kid in school! Julie’s deaf friend Joy is her running mate (this will provide some simple sign language learning opportunities for the cast!) and together, Julie and Joy must learn to overcome obstacles as they seek to win the election. Character opportunities include Julie, Joy, Ivy, Mrs. Duncan/Tracy, Mark/Mom, Angela, Amanda, and Alison. There are 8 spaces available in this class.

Monday B (2:30-4:00pm) – Hairum Scarum – Published by American Girl, this is a comedy about a couple of hairstylists who run an interesting hair salon. Just when they are afraid their business is dying, they’re surprised by visits from fairy-tale characters who need anything from a new identity, to a MAJOR haircut, or a fancy hairdo to impress a prince. Character opportunities include – Olivia, Hilda, Goldilocks, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Alice. There are 7 spaces in this class (plus a few “cameo” roles that are usually assigned to little sisters ages 5-7!).

The schedule this semester is a little different – please read carefully. The classes will begin on June 14 and run weekly through July 26 (7 weeks). The final practice will be on Thursday, August 5 (Julie for President! class – 6-7:30pm; Hairum Scarum class – 7:30-9pm). This is due to a scheduling conflict on my end. The Thursday evening practice will also enable us to have a better dress rehearsal at the church, since we will not have to reset all the furniture for the midweek service!

I know that there will be vacation conflicts and completely understand! That said, I would prefer for any student to only miss a maximum of 2 practices. While it’s not a requirement, it would be best for everyone involved if the full class can attend the first practice on June 14. This will be the day we pick parts for the play and I don’t want anyone to be unhappy with the part they receive if they miss the first class.

The plays will be performed at Faith Baptist Church, and the 8th rehearsal (Thursday, August 5 – see above) will be at the church as well. The performance of all three plays will be on Saturday, August 7, at 7:30pm. The girls will need to arrive at the church at 2:00 pm for a final dress rehearsal on the day of the play. We will have dinner and have time to do everyone's hair and makeup before it's showtime!

Classes will be held at my house in Lees Summit, less than a mile from Faith Baptist Church. I will send directions to the enrolled students' families before the classes begin.

Pricing is as follows: $75 for one daughter, $70 each for two daughters, $65 each for three or more daughters. The full class fee is required with registration (if this is a problem, let me know and I’m sure we can work something out – it is a requirement due to problems I have had in past semesters). Your registration and payment will hold your space in the class. It will be especially important this spring to send in your registration/payment soon, as the number of spaces is limited and will be filled first-come, first-serve, in the order I receive the registrations. You can still email/call to ask about availability, but I can't hold spaces without your registration. Register by April 29 and receive $5 off your total cost.

Interested in both the Craft Club and an AGDT drama class? Sign up for both and save:
AGDT - $75
Crafts - $45
Total - $120 - $10 discount = $110 (or $105 if you register by April 29!)

To register for the class, please send me your email address so that I can get you the registration form. You can email me at directorjewels@yahoo.com or leave a message on this post and I'll get back to you soon!

Thanks!
Julie
