Tentative Summer Classes (save the date!)
All of these dates/times are subject to change. Registration for these summer classes will open at a later date (likely March). Due to scheduling conflicts, there will likely NOT be a typical 8-10 week production except Little Women (for high school) this summer.

Spring 2018 Class Information
For all drama classes with kids ages 8+, the first class will be an informal audition, with part assignments emailed within approximately 24-72 hours to those enrolled. Audition info will be emailed to those enrolled, but will primarily consist of a recitation of a 1-minute monologue, some readings from the script (for younger kids, if they are not comfortable reading aloud for the audition, no worries - I'll have some easier options), and a few other activities. Personal preference is also always taken into consideration!
Drama Classes for Boys and Girls - ages 4-7
Storybook Theatre's Rising Stars - ages 4-7
Monday 5:30-6:15pm - February 26 - April 16
Performance: Options to participate in one of the April 21 performances. No additional participation fee.
Minimum 6 students.

Rising Stars introduces new and returning students to all the fun that theatre can be. Utilizing dramatic play, improvisation games, and short scripts (sometimes with a couple of lines to learn for the production), kids will learn about creating a stage presence and using their whole body to show emotion. This class is created to be a precursor for participating in the plays for ages 8-12. Typical performance expectations include learning short lines or songs, basic entrances and exits, participating in curtain call, etc.
Drama Classes for Boys and Girls - ages 8-12

Performance: April 21
The four March sisters put on one of Josephine's productions for their family and some new friends.They grumble about how Christmas won't be the same during the Civil War as it has been in years past. Their family bond stands strong, however, in spite of whatever hardships they face. This is a shorter/easier version of our Little Women at Christmas.
Time Period: 1860's

Classes begin: February 26
Performance: April 21
Edward and his sister Selina uncover a dragon living in a cave near their village. The dragon prefers writing poetry over fiercely burning down towns. Together the new friends contrive a plot to keep St. George from slaying the dragon.
Time Period: Fantasy/Medieval
Spaces in Class: 7 (4 boys, 3 girls, potentially flexible). Some flexibility for younger siblings to participate if desired.
Thursday 7:00-8:30pm The Stone in the Road
Classes begin: March 1
Performance: April 21
Directed by Molly Goetz
A queen puts her subjects to the test: who will move the large boulder from the road? Anyone kind enough to move the stone will be handsomely rewarded with a job as royal counselor to the queen! A host of wacky characters pass through the scene as the queen and her faithful servant, Barcarole, watch from a hiding place to see who will be unselfish. There is a pompous barber, burglars, snobby Mrs. Brenzinski and her bratty children, a disgruntled milkman, a runaway school principal and a retired gypsy fortuneteller, not to mention Fenster Fibb, the tax collector, who scares off some of the travelers simply by showing up! In the end we learn that actions, not complaints, often get a job done.

Spaces in Class: 12 (flexible for boys/girls)
Performance Day Information: Call time for 8-12 year old students is 9:30am. There is a mandatory parent meeting from 9:40-10:00am. If you are not in attendance at the meeting, you will not receive your free tickets to the performance. Students will need to bring a lunch. Parents may drop off students and return to watch the 3pm production.
Drama Classes for Girls & Boys - ages 13+
Note regarding all teen plays this semester: these were selected with the specific purpose of being FUN. We will be doing a serious high school drama in the summer (Little Women) and have just completed several dramatic productions back to back. Learning to hold character in a comedy is just as important as being able to build a dramatic character. None of these is a 2-hour production. They are all MUCH shorter than that, including the high school show. We anticipate that the high school show will fill quickly, but encourage you to still sign up for one of the other plays this semester if you miss getting to participate in that one. Julie's goal this semester is for everyone to just have fun - not to be in the "biggest" or "most dramatic" production - so we just didn't select a "big, dramatic" show.
Note: these classes are INTENDED for ages 13+ but age 12 is okay as long as your student has participated in at least two past productions with Storybook Theatre.

Tuesday 6:30-8:00pm Aunt Maggity's Dark and Stormy Night
Classes begin: February 27
Performance: April 20
There are laughs a-plenty and personalities galore in this light-hearted romp of a mystery that has a little bit of everything! Aunt Maggity, a horror novelist who lives up on an isolated mountaintop, keeps black widows in the bathroom, stuffed cobras on her writing desk and a heartbreaking secret just under the surface. When her four estranged nieces — Lavinia the C.E.O., Lola and Chloe, the NY fashion designers; and Francine, the amateur boxer — descend on her home for the reading of their parents’ will, everyone’s lives become topsy-turvy. On top of that, a rodeo clown who’s hiding something shows up in need of a place to stay for the night. Finally, Aunt Maggity appears along with Humphries, her faithful servant and friend, pushing her in her wheelchair as she rides the brake. “Feel the burn, Humphries!”, she orders him as he wheels her from room to room. As if all the relationships and secrets weren’t enough, more mystery enters the scene when one of the nieces disappears and Dreardon, the butler, is pushed down the mountain. This play has it all — from creepy spiders, suspense, and comedic chaos comes a sense of familial love, forgiveness, and what just might be the first happy ending in Aunt Maggity’s career.

Please don't sign up for this class if your student will not be 15 or older during the fall semester. Occasionally exceptions are made for younger siblings who are near the appropriate age. This is on a case-by-case basis; please contact Julie to discuss.
This class is being offered to female high school students at this time. Boys are welcome to sign up for one of the other teen productions.

Please include all potential conflicts with registration. This production is on a much shorter timeline than usual. We really need everyone at every rehearsal if at all possible to make up for the shorter number of weeks.

Sibling Discounts for Drama Classes
$5 off (each) per student from same household.
Examples:
2 students ages 8-12 would pay $120 each.
1 student age 8-12 and 1 teen student would pay $120 and $145.
1 student age 8-12 and 2 teen students would pay $115, $140, 140.
Class costs include rehearsal time (kid classes: 26+ hours, teen class: 30+ hours), group and one-on-one acting coaching, script, most costume, prop, and set expenses (with the exception of any personal items such as tights/undershirts/occasional items from your existing wardrobe or something like a pair of pants in a certain color), hair/makeup, and performance day snacks. Each child receives a speaking role if they are 8+, there are no "chorus" parts.
All classes are held at Storybook Theatre Director Julie's home in Lees Summit, MO.
Performances are held at Faith Baptist Church on Langsford Road in Lees Summit, MO.
I prefer for any student to miss NO MORE than two rehearsals. Please message me before registering if you have more conflicts than two.
